The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is one of the most innovative crossovers on the market today. Not only do you get the capabilities of standard all-wheel drive and a spacious interior, you also get increased fuel economy from the plug-in hybrid system. It is made from five components.
2.4-liter engine. The Outlander PHEV comes with an efficient Atkinson-cycle engine that offers low CO2 emissions, high fuel economy, and a long expansion stroke.
Twin motor 4WD and S-AWC. There are separate motors that control each of the axles to help deliver reactive 4WD performance through the Super-All-Wheel-Control system. This gives the Outlander PHEV an intuitive driving feel with great handling and stability.
Drive battery. The Outlander PHEV has a large-capacity 13.8kWh battery. It is stored under the floor, so it doesn’t take away any interior space. This also helps to lower the center of gravity for improved performance.
Front motor PDU & rear EMCU. These are smart control units that are designed to optimize efficiency and motor control. They also help deliver instant maximum torque to outpace even larger 3.0-liter engines.
Generator. A high-performance generator takes the engine power and turns it into electricity to help recharge the drive battery and provide an extra boost to the motors, when necessary.
With these five components, the Outlander PHEV can be great for daily driving or even outdoor weekend adventures. There are three driving modes that the Outlander PHEV will automatically switch between, depending on the driving conditions.
EV Drive Mode. This mode relies solely on electric power. It offers up to 22 miles of electric-only driving.
Series Hybrid Mode. In this mode, the engine power is sent through the generator to create electricity to power the motors.
Parallel Hybrid Mode. This is the mode used when travelling at high speeds. The engine will power the vehicle with assistance from the motors.
