The 2018 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross is an all-new small crossover SUV that not only revives one of the most famous names from Mitsubishi’s heritage but also strives to reign at the top of a very crowded automotive segment. Some of its major competitors include the 2018 Toyota C-HR, 2018 Nissan Rogue Sport, and 2018 Subaru Crosstrek. This is how it compares.

The 2018 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross’s base engine is a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder. All three of the aforementioned crossovers use a 2.0-liter four-cylinder. Thanks to the smaller displacement and to the extra power and efficiency provided by the turbocharger, the Eclipse Cross delivers comparable fuel economy to the competition while producing significantly more power: horsepower is 152 — higher than the CH-R and Rogue Sport, and tied with the Crosstrek — and torque is 184 lb-ft — significantly higher than any of the others.

The Eclipse Cross, Rogue Sport, Crosstrek, and CH-R are all very competitively priced. The cheapest of the lot is the Nissan Rogue Sport, which starts at $21,640, but whose low price is felt in the lack of features and premium materials. Though the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross starts at $23,295, it is much better equipped: 16-inch alloy wheels, BLUETOOTH® connectivity, automatic climate control, heated side mirrors and a 7-inch touchscreen all come standard.*

Historically, one of the advantages of the Subaru Crosstrek over other small SUVs has been its superior off-roading prowess. But now the 2018 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross is also a strong contender in that space. It comes with both front-wheel drive (FWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD), with the latter offered as standard on all but the base ES trim, and boasts 8 inches of ground clearance with FWD and 8.6 inches with AWD, putting it on par with the Crosstrek when it comes to off-road ability, and far ahead of the others.
